Click here for news archive. SY working on new album + want to get into movies! August 19, 2001 MTV reports about the new SY release: "For the next Sonic Youth album, Moore said they're going after a classic rock sound with the stylings of avant-noise rockers Whitehouse, whose sound is marked by eruptions of electronics and vocals. "It's pretty much where we've always been at in a way that sort of grand, American tradition but infusing it with complete and utter noise anarchy, la Whitehouse. We're balancing those two concepts." Their Geffen contract, however, is on shaky grounds - Thurston suggests they might release the album themselves. And if you thought the video included on SYR4 was hi-tech, get a load of this: "We basically want to make movies get away from this record-making business," Moore said. "DVDs are where it's at." Sonic Youth, initially comprising of guitarist /
vocalists Thurston
Moore and Lee
Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim
Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product
of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive,
experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the
experimental composer Glenn Branca. The band were joined in 1985 by drummer Steve
Shelley, and have now recorded 14 albums together, as well as many side and solo
projects. Their work has been consistently challenging and innovative, and they
are widely regarded as one of the most intriguing and influential bands of their
time.
