Solo Projects at Tonic
January 13, 2005

The club Tonic will host two Sonic side projects this month:

On Wed, Jan 19:
"Loren Connors' Passion of Joan of Arc plus Text of Light: Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, Ulrich Krieger, DJ Olive & Tim Barnes
$10
Loren Connors' Passion of Joan of Arc: Screening of Loren's re-edited version of the Dreyer film Passion of Joan of Arc with his own original soundtrack.
Text of Light: Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, Ulrich Krieger, DJ Olive & Tim Barnes: First NYC performance since 2002 by this group, which performs live improvisations with screenings of experimental cinema".

On Sat, Jan 22:
"Monotract plus Mirror/Dash plus Paul Flaherty-Chris Corsano Duo plus Magik Markers
$12
Monotract: A 3-piece howling, scratching, glitching, feedbacking and clawing out of the bowels of Bushwick...stained and scarred.
Mirror/Dash: 1st NYC appearance by this duo of Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore since their legendary live performance in Rita Ackermann's bedroom in the late 90s. Any which way but loose.
Paul Flaherty-Chris Corsano Duo: For the past 6 years, New England-based saxophonist Paul Flaherty and drummer Chris Corsano have operated together in duo format as well as in collaborations with some of the finest freedom thinkers around: Nmperign's Greg Kelly, Tony Conrad, Matt Heyner of Test /No Neck Blues Band, and Christina Carter and Heather Murray of Charalambides/Scorces. Together, Flaherty & Corsano seek to champion the cause of total free improvisation, an often misunderstood, underestimated, and even hated artform.
Magik Markers: The Magik Markers started in Hartford, CT, took over the joint with a double guitar assault (one detuned into a bass, the other attacked with a style like a garage rock Teenage Jesus). Through sporadic touring and constant relocation they've developed into one of USA's most harrowing and mesmerizing live noise units since mid-period Germs, most known for their 9-date stint opening for Sonic Youth this past summer and a full-length LP forthcoming on Ecstatic Peace".

Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth, initially comprising of guitarist / vocalists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive, experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the experimental composer Glenn Branca. The band were joined in 1985 by drummer Steve Shelley, and have now recorded 14 albums together, as well as many side and solo projects. Their work has been consistently challenging and innovative, and they are widely regarded as one of the most intriguing and influential bands of their time.
