More On SYR4
May 18, 1999

It's been a while waiting for SYR4, but now it finally seems like there's some kind of a release date set. The record -- which, by the way, will go by the name ''Goodbye 20th Century'' -- will be released on 11/1/99. Let's see what the fine folks at Smells Like Records have announced on their newsletter about this upcoming release:

Sonic Youth are still in the process of putting the final touches on SYR 4 that will most likely be a double LP and CD. SYR 4 will be a collection of Modern Compositions as performed by Sonic Youth with Jim O’Rourke, William Winant and Japanese Composer/Musician Kosugi Takahashi. The collection will have pieces by such composers as Christian Wolf, John Cage, Steve Reich, James Tenney, Yoko Ono and Kosugi Takahashi. Some lucky folks got a chance to catch a sneak peek of this coming material at the Bowery Ball Room show in April and the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival show with the NY Art Ensemble (who proved that they were still one of the heaviest jazz bands ever even after a twenty plus year hiatus) in June.

Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth, initially comprising of guitarist / vocalists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, guitarist / bassist / vocalist Kim Gordon and drummer Richard Edson, were formed in New York City in 1981. A product of the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the group had their roots in abrasive, experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having previously worked with the experimental composer Glenn Branca. The band were joined in 1985 by drummer Steve Shelley, and have now recorded 14 albums together, as well as many side and solo projects. Their work has been consistently challenging and innovative, and they are widely regarded as one of the most intriguing and influential bands of their time.
